At Grow East Anglia, our community allotment is more than just a garden—it’s a space where people come together to grow, share, and give back. Every week during the growing season, our volunteers gather to work in our 60-foot polytunnel, cultivating fresh produce that supports The Shelf, the Community Supermarket at Citizens Advice in Diss.
But it’s not all hard work! After a day of digging, planting, and harvesting, we unwind in our cosy yurt with a well-deserved cup of tea and some biscuits—a chance to share stories, laughs, and the satisfaction of a job well done.
Growing for the Community
Our volunteers give their time and energy to grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, ensuring The Shelf is stocked with fresh, nutritious, and locally grown produce. This vital initiative provides affordable food for those who need it most, and it’s a privilege to play a role in supporting our community.
As a thank-you, volunteers also get to take home a share of the produce they help to grow. It’s a win-win: healthy food for our community and a chance for our volunteers to enjoy the fruits (and veggies!) of their labour.
Sustainability at Heart
Our community allotment is committed to sustainability and caring for the environment. Here’s how we do it:
- Natural Fertiliser: The chickens that call our allotment home don’t just provide entertainment—they also provide nutrient-rich manure that we use to fertilise our soil naturally.
- Composting: We compost garden waste and kitchen scraps to create our own organic compost, reducing waste and enriching the soil for future crops.
- Polytunnel Efficiency: The 60-foot polytunnel helps extend the growing season, allowing us to grow more produce with minimal environmental impact.
Get Involved!
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or new to the world of planting, we’d love to welcome you to the team. Volunteering at the community allotment is a chance to:
- Learn about sustainable gardening practices.
- Enjoy fresh air and exercise.
- Make new friends and be part of a supportive community.
- Help provide fresh, healthy food for those who need it most.

A Space to Grow—Together
Our community allotment is about more than just growing food—it’s about growing connections, skills, and a shared sense of purpose. Every spadeful of soil turned, every plant nurtured, and every harvest gathered helps to create a stronger, more sustainable community.
Come join us and be part of something special!
